my little experiment

Do I look scary? I'm an atheist that's why. Feel free to add horns and fangs to your mental picture of me

There are people who think that guys who keep diaries are sissies  …to those people, I say this is no diary this is a blog!!! It’s the in thing nowadays in case you haven’t you heard. It’s a way for me to get in touch with my more sensitive side  …So lay off bullies

I’ve never been good at commenting on things that are of little consequence to my everyday existence and things that are far removed from the realms of science, philosophy …and video games.

I marvel at people who could just make a comment on the color of a curtain and start a lively conversation out of that. You could give me half an hour and I wouldn’t be able to think of anything to say about that other than, maybe, “it’s very pretty …love the color”. To put it lightly, I may be a bit socially inept. This could be good practice for me. For this blog I'll try to talk about lighter stuff.

I don’t know how you start these things so let me just first introduce myself. I’m Jaywalker, male, twenty-something, young entrepreneur, student, online debater and an atheist since grade 5 …and that’s about as much as I’m willing to let you know lest I be disowned by my family for spreading very scandalous family secrets.

Anyway this is just an experiment. I’ll probably make another more mature blog that I can actually be proud of with structured essays and stuff and using formal English.

To people who like debates especially concerning issues about religion, philosophy, science you may check out some of these threads at pinoyexchange. My handle is jaywalker:

young "entrepreneur"

do I look scary? I'm an atheist that's why

They call it buy and sell I prefer to call it “smart investing”, my new found hobby. Instead of letting your money rest or buying things that will lose half their market value in a very short period of time, you convert your money into second hand gadgets that, in turn, you can convert into even more money which you can convert into more gadgets and so on… Aside from earning money you also get the pleasure of owning some very nifty gadgets even if it’s just for a couple of days. Also, because of the number of different gadgets that pass through your hands, you gain more knowledge about those gadgets and the market for them which make you spot good deals easier.  There’s just no reason to not be doing it. It’s fun and profitable

I shudder whenever I think of all the unrecoverable money I’ve spent on bad investments. Just in 2004 I spent more than 30,000 on my PC and every year I spent something like 8000 on a new video card and a couple of thousand more for a new processor. The 30,000 I spent on my PC, I can’t even convert to 13,000 now. If that 30,000 was invested properly, even if it just grew by 150% between 2004 and today ( a very conservative estimate), I could be trading used cars by now. –probably not much more lucrative than gadgets but it would serve the ego very well if I was able to buy a car with my own money in my mid 20’s

I obviously don’t intend to do “buy and sell”( at least the way I’m doing it now) for the rest of my life. For now, it’s just the fastest, surest, most fun way of making my money grow. If you know the market fully there’s just no way that your investment will go down in value. My father’s been bugging me about helping in the family business for quite some time now. I want to and I intend to sometime in the future but it’s just too much responsibility for me right now. Plus just thinking about how my father talks to his employees and the way he criticizes their intellectual capacity for every mistake they make …I just don’t think I can operate effectively under such scrutiny. Especially with my style since I like taking risks –calculated risks but risks nonetheless. It also doesn’t help that I turn into a little kid whenever I’m with my father. I can’t even make simple decisions.

To me being a janitor isn’t much different from being a hired engineer. An occupation where you have someone above you ordering you around is extremely, extremely unattractive for me. Unless I’m dying of hunger, I will never, etch it in stone-ever be an employee. I don’t care if the job pays 200k a month. I’d rather make half that money through my own means. It’s not obvious when you first look at me but pride is something that I have a lot of and I won’t give it away for anything.

Aside from selling used camcorders and other electronic gadgets, I also sell brand new mid range digital cameras (canon A410, A430 etc) with 1 year warranty at a much lower price than you get at the malls.  Btw if you were inspired in some way, a word of advice: don’t get into this business unless you know what you’re doing and unless you have good contacts ‘cause you’ll lose a lot of money

....thanks to anokaya for introducing me to tabulas

I forgot this is supposed to be a “light” blog …I’ll try to talk about curtains next time

Hollywood movies

As a rule, the only movies I watch are foreign language films, independent films, movies by great directors and art films. I’m stuck up when it comes to these things I’d rather be caught wearing a pink shirt than be seen standing near a theatre showing a blockbuster Hollywood movie …occasionally though for some weird and childishly shallow reason, I’d watch a Hollywood flick or two  Like just last week….

Since I thought it’d be good bonding time with the peeps, I‘d get free popcorn and since I didn’t have any pink shirts anyway, I watched MI3 at SM north edsa

In an alternate dimension where big explosions are synonymous to figurative, intellectually gripping, plot devices, this could actually be a pretty deep movie.

I must admit It was fun up to a certain point –until I finished my first large bag of popcorn. I lost consciousness soon after that and remained unconscious until I got my second bag. But popcorn induced enjoyment can only last so long. After you’ve finished your second bag, when your hands and lips …and shirt are all orange and sticky and your head feels like it’s full of MSG, you’d wanna get out.

I’d like to give you a review but I was snoozing or busily eating popcorn and downing coke for most of the movie so I have no idea what it was about. Maggie Q was somewhat cute though. It’s nice to see Asians starring in non-stereotypical roles

Another Hollywood movie I saw recently was Silent hill. Hardcore fans of the franchise will be pleased ’cause the movie is visually as faithful to the source material as is possible using live actors. I think it’s pretty accurate to say that this is the most faithful adaptation of any game into a movie ever …The lighting, the colors, the camera movement
The movie is basically a remake of silent hill 1 (which’s sad since I thought it was gonna be based on SH2) only instead of a male lead looking for her daughter, this time it’s a mother looking for her daughter. The other characters though were lifted straight from the game. Allessa, Cybil, Dahlia, pyramid head etc. The female lead character is reminiscent of the main character in silent hill 3. The soundtrack is also lifted straight from the games. The director obviously knew the right way to appeal to gamers.

I wouldn’t recommend the movie to people who haven’t played the games. A lot of the scenes are there just to elicit goosebumps from hardcore fans and the plot definitely would be confusing to people who haven’t played the games.

Young "Entrepreneur" 2

Untitled

After more than a week without selling anything, I finally have a buyer. I’ll be shipping the item to him tomorrow …I should have a few more buyers this week, I hope. I was actually starting to get demoralized. I had had this huge inventory of camcorders for more than a week and my father was already starting to lecture me about not taking too much risk in business. I usually have buyers for my items even before I acquire them but this time, through some strange twist of fate I lost them all ….hopefully I’ll still meet my goal of 70-90k before the trimester ends.

The plan before was to continue buying and selling until I graduate from college-From gadgets to second hand cars. Now, I’m thinking of altering my plans a bit. Retail sucks!! …too jittery and unpredictable. Business to business transactions are the way to go. I’m doing a lot of research on import export right now …it may be a bit too ambitious at this stage but I’ll definitely shift gears once I’ve reached the 100-150k mark. I’m not sure which course to take yet but it wouldn’t be efficient anymore to have an inventory of more than 10 camcorders unless I have a shop and some employees.

This is one advantage of starting young. Even if I lose 100% of my capital I won’t go hungry and since nobody depends on me for basic needs yet, not even myself ( I still am fed by my parents) I won’t have to deal with guilt so it’s easier to take risks.

Roadmap:

Short term goal: reach 70-90k before the trimester ends (btw that’s profit plus whatever’s left from my allowance)

After 2 years: Manage or co-manage the family business

The long term goal is to create a family financial empire rivaling at least the tambunting’s within my lifetime :D ….I’m glad I remained childish enough to be this ambitious. I hope I never mature

Sharp Vl-Z300

I'll be saying good bye to this tomorrow
